Alignment – The Dance of Our Greatest Possibility

Yoga means to yoke, to connect, or to align the Body, Mind, and Spirit. Today, on the last day of the first month of a bright new year, we were greeted with a majestic total lunar eclipse. The sun, moon and Earth yoked in alignment. In astronomy an alignment such as this is called a “syzygy,” which means the configuration of the sun, moon, and Earth in one straight line – a conjunction, a yoking, an alignment of three heavenly bodies.
As the sun, moon, and Earth align to a majestic dance of burnt orange, pink, and copper hues, we call upon the power of our heart to reveal to us our greatest and highest possibility as a divine dance of syzygy. We use the foundational aspects of a yoga practice: Will, Knowledge, and Action (Iccha, Jnana, Kriya) to manifest our own personal syzygy. Yoga asks us what it is we truly want, as a deep resonance of our heart. This is Iccha. What it is we wish to create, what are our intentions in this bright new year? We call upon Jnana as Knowledge. What is it we need to learn in order to make this deeper desire manifest? Finally, we call upon Kriya or Action. We have to put one foot in front of the other if we ever hope to make things happen in our lives. It’s like reading a cookbook without actually cooking or tasting the dish. It is nice, maybe even fun, but probably not our greatest possibility. Yoga supports us and teaches us how to create syzygy as an alignment to our greatest possibility. We start each class with an intention, Iccha, a promise we make to ourselves where endless possibility meets dedicated efforts. As we hold the postures we also hold a remembrance; the postures become a physicalization of the promises we wish to keep with ourselves. We learn alignment of postures, we learn how to work with our breath, we learn how to be with ourselves and others when things get difficult – Jnana. And finally, Kriya. Every time we practice it becomes an act, a dance of our greatest possibility where we intend to do something and we back it up with our actions. As we yoke our body, mind and heart, our practice becomes an alignment, a syzygy of strength, love and healing.
Thank you for your practice. Thank you for your presence. Thank you for your magnificent heart. Syzygy soon!
Big Love,
